Deck Chair Cinema

The outdoor setting, on the edge of Darwin Harbour is absolutely stunning. The lights reflected from anchored and passing ships make for a serene periphery. The wonderful sunsets over the sea every evening are a stunning backdrop for people who come early with their picnic dinners.

Run by the community-based Darwin Film Society, the Deckchair Cinema runs seven nights a week during the dry season screenings a range of movies from family favourites to festivals and foreign films.

Our kiosk sells wine – by the glass or bottle – beer, soft drinks and snacks as well as a range of Deckchair merchandise. The box office and kiosk open at 6.30pm every night allowing plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere.

The ambience is very laid back and relaxed. There are 250 deckchairs as well as about 100 straight-backed seats. We do supply some cushions, but recommend that people bring their own for extra comfort. During the months we operate the Deckchair Cinema (April to November) skies are usually cloud-free and the stars make a great backdrop for the screen.

Deckchair Cinema is accessible via the walkway from the Esplanade. This path has recently been upgraded and is well lit before and after each screening. The cinema is also accessible from the end of Kitchener Drive, turn right into Jervois Road, in the Wharf Precinct. There is plenty of parking available.
